Selected Student Glossary 5th, 4th, 3rd Kyu


Nage (nah-geh) - Hopefully you, the person who is being attacked and performs the Aikido technique.

Uke (oo-keh) - Bad guy, the person attacking & receiving the technique.

Ukemi (oo-keh-me) - The art of attacking, receiving and following a technique in a safe and intelligent manner.


Posture positions:

H
anmi (hon-me) - Left or right triangular stance.

Ai Hanmi (eye-hon-me) - Uke & Nage have the same foot forward.

Gyaku Hanmi (ghee-ah-koo hon-me) - Uke & Nage have opposite foot forward.

Maai (mah-eye) - Distance between uke & nage. Time and Space.

Seiza (seh-ee-zah) - Formal kneeling position with straight back


Technique categories:

Omote
(oh-moe-teh) - entering movement in front of Uke.

Ura (oo-rah) - entering movement behind Uke.

Taino Henko (tah-ee-no-hen-koe) - Basic blending exercise, see Tenkan.

Irimi (ee-ree-me) - To enter (without collision). Entering movement going toward Uke.

Tenkan (ten-kahn) - A step and turning movement.

Kaiten (ka-ee-ten) - A pivoting rotation, using the hips.

Soto (soh-toh) - Outside.
Uchi (ooh- chi) - Inside

Soto Kaitan - outside turning movement.
Uchi Kaitan - inside turning movement.

Hanmi Handachi
- (hon-me hon-dah-chee) - Nage is kneeling, Uke is standing.

Uchi Mawari - Inside turn, lead for Kaintenage.
Soto Mawari (mah-wah-re) - Outside variation.

Swari-waza (swah-ree wah-zah) - Kneeling techniques.

Shiko (shee-koe) - Knee walking.


Attack strikes by Uke:

Shomenuchi (show-men-oo-chee) - Strike to the top-front of the head.

Yokomenuchi (yoh-koh-men-oochee) - Strike to the side of the head.

Tsuki (t’ski) - Thrust, punch or lunge, ie: to stomach.


Attack grabs by Uke:

Katatori (kah-tah-toe-ree) - Shoulder or lapel grab.

Katatetori (kah-tah-teh-toe-ree) - Wrist grab.

Ryokatatori (ree-oh-kah-tah-toe-ree) - Grabbing two shoulders or lapels from front.

Ryotetori (ree-oh-teh-toe-ree) - Uke grabs nage’s both wrists. Also called Tekubitori.

Morotetori (moe-roe-teh-toe-ree) - Uke grabs nage’s wrist with both hands, forward hand on top.

Ushiro (oo-she-roe) - Back or rear.

Ushiro Ryokatatori (ree-oh-kah-tah-toeree) - Both shoulders grabbed from behind.

Ushiro Tekubitori (teh-koo-bee-toe-ree) - Both wrist grabbed from behind.


Katame Waza - Immobilization techniques by Nage:

Ikkyo (ee-kio) - First Technique - arm pin.

Nikkyo (nee-kio) - Second technique, control wrist by turning it in.

Sankyo (son-kio) - Third technique, control wrist by twisting it.


Nage Waza - Throwing movements by Nage:

Iriminage (ee-ree-me-nah-geh) - Entering throw, putting Uke's head to Nage's shoulder then Tenkan.

Shihonage (shee-hoe-nah-geh) - Four direction throw, take Uke's wrist, pivot 180° over Nage's head and then turn Uke's wrist to back of Uke's shoulder.

Tenchinage (ten-she-nah-geh) - Heaven (ten) & earth (chi) throw, a type of Iriminage.

Kotegaeshi (koe-teh-gah-eh-she) - throwing by twisting out Uke's wrist with thumb by base of Uke's ring-finger.

Kaitenage (kah-ee-ten-nah-geha) - Rotary throw, diagonally pushing arm behind Uke's back and controlling Uke's head downward then Tenkan.

Kokyunage is often used for techniques with no specific name. Breath power throw.


Kokyu (coke-you) - Breath power, unifying Ki flow and breath, coordination of breathing and movement.

Kokyuho - Breath throw, breath exercise.

Kokyudosa - sitting Kokyu excerise.


Jodan (joe-don) - High position (face area).

Chudan (chew-don) - Middle position (abdominal area).

Gedan (gey-don) - Low position (knee area).
